On Friday, May 18, 2012 Ueli Steck (35) and his climbing parter Tenzing (21) of Nepal, reached the summit of Everest without the use of oxygen.
They reached South Col. on Thursday, May 17, and were able to summit Everest on Friday, May 18.
According to Ueli, everything went according to plan. On May 15, Ueli wrote the following message on his website:
"The weather looks great. Tenzing and I will leave base camp tomorrow morning to Camp 2 after a nice breakfast in the sun. We plan to leave late on May 17, 2012, and go straight to Camp 4 where we will have a couple of hours to rest before we set off for a summit push around midnight. I hope this time I will not get too cold, so that we can reach the summit on the morning of May 18, 2012.“
Steck had to end his expedition last year, with just over approximately 100 meters before the summit due to poor climbing conditions. Fortunately, everything ran perfectly for him on this attempt.
