7 Things To Do In The Mountains This Fall When There’s Nothing Else To Do

La Veta Oktoberfest | October 5, 2013
Sure, anyone can go to Vail or Denver for their big Oktoberfest celebrations. Why not try something entirely new? With a German band in the morning and a Rock and Roll band at night, kick off October Fest in this unlikely spot with a beer garden of course and 60 arts, crafts and food vendors. They also have the Twin Peak Rodder’s car show which may not be a German tradition but maybe they’ll have a Mercedes Benz?

Durango Cowboy Poet Gathering | October 3-6
This gathering of classic Cowboy Poets takes place at the historic Strater Theater in beautiful downtown Durango. Come get your cowboy on while listening to classic and contemporary poetry from the likes of G.T. Hurley, Gary McMahon and Belinda Gail. Chances are, if you didn’t bring a cowboy hat with you, you’ll leave town with one on your head.

Breckenridge Craft Spirits Fest | October 4-6
Most festivals feature a beer tent or beer garden, but not this one. This is all about booze and locally crafted booze at that. Small batch distillers will be sampling their wares, along with saloon tours, distillery tours and of course, hangover brunches.

Aspen Hockey Mountain High | October 4-6
Open and Recreational divisions are welcome for up to 40 teams at the Lewis Ice Arena. Reminds me of a joke: what’s 20 feet long and has 3 teeth? The home team bench at the Lewis Ice Arena. Okay, sorry about that. Discount lodging (yeah right, in Aspen?) after party and other specials are available to all players.

Tour of the Moon Bicycle Classic
This classic race starting in Grand Junction, Co and including the iconic Colorado National Monument outside of Grand Junction was made famous during the 1980s Coors Classic and featured in the movie American Flyers. Unfortunately they have reached their limit of 2000 riders for this year, but you can always come up to spectate and party at all the festivities. Maybe you’ll decide to enter early enough next year.

Lake City The Hunter’s Ball and Community Dinner | October 10-13
This is held on the Thursday before the first rifle hunting season begins. Sponsored by the Hinsdale County/ Lake City Chamber of Commerce this mountain party features dinner, door prizes and raffles. They are giving away rifles, handguns and for those of you skittish about those sorts of things, stick around for the quilts.

Telluride Horror Show October | 1-13
In 2011 Movie Maker Magazine dubbed this one of the top 20 coolest movie festivals. Featuring an average of 20 features and 30+ shorts this should get you primed for Halloween. Held in the historic and possibly haunted Sheridan Opera House the fest includes Horror, Fantasy and Sci-Fi flicks along with special guests and events in this 3 day genre fest.
